"Heroes, Saints and The Meaning Of Life"

We will look at two major cultural icons, the Heroe and the Saint throughout history in an attempt to understand the messages they have left regarding the meaning of life. We will examine the basic concepts of Heroes and Saints and explore what they mean in our own individual lives. We will first clarify these two distinct genealogical histories of cultural heredity. One genealogical line originates in Greek culture with Socrates, the other line of cultural heredity descends from Abraham. We will then turn our attention to Saint Paul and Saint Augustine who represent the first major attempts to synthesize the two cultural archetypes in the ideal of one unified culture of Christian Humanism. The instability in this genetic hybrid reveals itself in the novel mutations of the type manifested by figures such as Mohammed and Michaelangelo, two pivotal figures in the story of mankind. We will pass through the age of enlightenment and move forward to Nietzsche’s announcement of “the Death of God” And finally, we will move on to the 20th century and we make an attempt to formulate the question in terms of variant mutations of some traditional paradigms against the backdrop of the War to end all Wars, restructuring of world maps after the war, Hubbel, the Quantum Revolution and the founding of Religious Science.
